91 Points

Khalifa Kush’s Baby Turtle flower walked away with a glowing 95 point review back in September. Will a 1g preroll of their Khalifa Mints share the same fate?

Well, we couldn't have picked a better day for this review. It’s gray and overcast here in LA and I have very little work on my plate, as it's Indigenous Peoples' Day. Fortunately, it's game 2 of the NLCS and I’ll be headed to gorge myself on German food and beer when the Dodgers kick things off at 1pm. I can think of no better way to combat my pre-game anxiety (and build my pre-game appetite) than finishing this pre-roll before I walk over.

Khalifa Mints is the classic Khalifa Kush hybrid cultivar crossed with The Menthol- and is, once again, hand-selected by Wiz himself. The Menthol comes from renowned breeders Compound Genetics and naturally, will knock your socks off with its bouquet of spicy, minty, and peppery terps.

Their website tells me to expect notes of “classic OG gas, creamy gelato, and minty menthol” and as I take my dry hits, all three of these elements shine through clearly, though I tend to get more of a chocolate flavor than cream. This is the sort of winning dry hit that forces you to pass it around the sesh so everyone can experience it before it (and they) get lit.

The joint itself smells of lemons, with an earthy-diesel funk that has a clear bite of spice to it. Oddly enough, this particular blend of scents and tastes reminds me of my grandma’s old lakeside apartment in St. Clair Shores, Michigan. She didn’t smoke, menthols or otherwise…but the geriatric fisherman milling around the docks certainly did. Overall, it invokes pleasant nostalgia, with subtle hints of her signature sickly-sweet White Shoulders perfume, seaweed, and fumes from cars streaming up Jefferson Avenue.

The burn was incredibly slow and consistent, never requiring a relight or running at all. The smoke is buttery smooth and a decent-sized oil ring appears a few minutes in. Halfway through, I did find myself wondering “was finishing this…wise?”, as I could feel its potent effects creeping up and starting to make themselves known, with a tingling sensation slowly swelling behind my eyes. This cannabis puts you into a sort of trance but without any of that “couchlock” sedation. It has a way of slowing down time. Each peck of my laptop keyboard hangs with the sense of weight typically found in manual typewriters. I’d imagine this would make for ideal weed for playing video games, perhaps even giving the user an edge of superior focus, like Doc Ellis pitching on LSD? You just feel…content, wherever you are.

If I don’t end up making it over to the Tavern for the game today, I’ll live.

I was disappointed by a lack of euphoric uplift or any real sense of mood elevation. The trance was relaxing, delivering an altered sense of being but not one that hit in the same way the Baby Turtle or Violet Sky did for me. Those were both something to write home about.

Wiz’s releases have consistently been of high enough quality that I suggest that everyone tries them out. This has been my least favorite of the bunch because the high lacked fun or nuance- but it still ranks quite respectably at 91 points. If we end up implementing half points, I’ll revise it to a 91.5, sheerly for the impressive duration of its effects.

I’d pay the ~$14 for this with zero regrets and would wager at least half of my (non-industry) friends would find it to be too potent.

But I’d be unlikely to buy it again, knowing that Cameron Jibril Thomaz has some options better suited to my tastes.

Album Pairing: The King of Limbs - Radiohead

It's a spectral, ambient trance of an album. Naturally, it was recorded at Drew Barrymore’s house.
