I’ve tried a lot of different chocolate based edibles, and my issue with many of them is that the cannabis flavor is overwhelming. I don’t mind a little cannabis taste in my edibles, but I usually prefer when it is strain specific and the flavor of the cultivar shines. With chocolates, it is usually just an overpowering generic cannabis flavor that masks the actual chocolate. As an edible judge for the California State Fair Cannabis Awards, I was tasked with sampling and judging several chocolate based products, and I was especially excited to try the Emerald Sky Indica Milk Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups. I was hopeful that even if the chocolate had a distinct cannabis flavor, the peanut butter would help keep it from being too overwhelming.

Each Peanut Butter Cup (PBC, from now on) contains 10mg of THC with ten pieces in the package for a total of 100mg of THC. This review is based on my Minimum Effective Dose (MED), or the smallest amount needed to achieve the desired effect. My MED currently sits at 100mg of THC, so I consumed the entire bag. If you are unsure of your MED, it is recommended to start with 5mg of THC, or half of one PBC. Wait 90 minutes, then incrementally add 5mg as needed. Remember, your MED may change as your tolerance gets higher or lower.

The PBCs come individually wrapped inside a large ziploc bag. As I tore into the first wrapped PBC, I was met with the delightful smell of milk chocolate and peanut butter, with just faint notes of cannabis. The PBCs are about the size of a mini Reese’s PBC, and they are covered in a very light dusting of sugar. I found the sugar to be superfluous, but it helps preserve the integrity of the chocolate, so it is a somewhat essential part of the product. Biting into that first PBC was pure heaven. As I had hoped, the flavor of the peanut butter helped with any potential overwhelming cannabis flavor, although the hints of cannabis were mild and not overpowering at all. The chocolate was delicious and high quality, and the peanut butter was smooth and creamy. I have a big sweet tooth, so eating all ten of these was not a problem for me. However, to high dose consumers who do not wish to eat a lot of sugar, this may not be the product for you. For lower dose consumers with a sweet tooth, good luck eating only one! I would maybe buy a bag of mini Reese’s PBCs to have on hand in case you desire more than one after eating your Emerald Sky PBC.

As with most indica edibles, I prefer to consume these in the evening time. Because I wanted to eat them on a fairly empty stomach, I got to eat dessert before dinner! I was hoping for a relaxing, but not sedating effect that would transition me into a restful night’s sleep. That is exactly what I got. About 45 minutes after eating the PBCs as dinner was ending, I felt my body start to become tingly and numb. I quickly moved into a very relaxed state, not sedated, just relaxed. The effects were mostly in the body, although there was some mild cerebral energy as well. Nothing racy or anxious, just a little brain movement. Mostly, though, these PBCs had me stuck to my couch engrossed in what we were watching on TV. My body felt great. My body wasn’t in any pain that day, but if it was, I imagine that these would have numbed it. As I had hoped, by the time I was ready for bed, the effects had mostly worn off, leaving my whole body relaxed and ready for a restful snooze.

The Emerald Sky Peanut Butter Cups gave me the best of both worlds; an extremely tasty product and wonderful effects. Oftentimes, the best tasting edibles don’t provide great effects, and edibles with great effects don’t taste great. It is so refreshing to find an edible that tastes great and feels great. My fellow edible judges agreed, as we decided to award Emerald Sky with the Silver Medal for Edibles, “Chocolates, Baked Goods, misc.” category. Congrats to Emerald Sky, and I look forward to trying more products from them in the future!
